A Study on Hospital Nurses¢¥ Subjective Perception on Nursing Profession and Their Attitudes Toward Nursing Autonomy and Patients¢¥ Rights


Abstract
The purpose of this study was to find out hospital nurses¢¥ subjective perception of nursing profession and their attitudes toward nursing autonomy and patients¢¥ rights. This survey was conducted on 130 nurses who were working at Chonnam University Hospital during October 15-27, 1984.
The results were as follows:
1. Of the respondents to the questionnaire, 77% were less than 27 Years of age, 83.1% junior nursing college graduates, 86.2% unmarried, 76.2% staff nurses and 53.8% had clinical experience of less than 3 years duration.
2. The respondents who took nursing profession to be a meaningful one were 88.5%, those who have uncertainty of the definition of nursing practice were 50.8% and those who take continuing education to be necessary in performing independent nursing function were 50.0%.
3. The subjective perception score was positively correlated with the period of clinical experience, the meaningfulness of nursing profession and the rejection of traditional role limitation score. (df=5/124, F=2,579, p<0.05: df=4/125, F=3,692, p<0.01: r=.1475, p<0.05)
The factors of age and education didn¢¥t affect the subjective perception score.
4. The nursing autonomy score was positively correlated with the patients¢¥ rights score and the rejection of traditional role limitations score. (r=.1569, p<0.05: r=.4070, p<0.001)
5. The factors of age, basic nursing education, period of clinical experience, position and working field didn¢¥t significantly affect the scores of the nursing autonomy, patients¢¥ rights and rejection of traditional role limitations.
